Science
Science is central to students developing their knowledge, skills and experience at understanding the natural and physical world in terms of why and how things happen. There is significant focus on scientific enquiry to understand the evidence on which theories are based through active learning.
Some students with autism have significant strengths in computing and design and technology developing these strengths is central to successful learning, living and working in a rapidly changing technological world. We are therefore committed to the innovative use of ICT. As well as regular ICT sessions, all students will have access to an individual tablet as a communication and research tool. Computing is a core subject, therefore opportunities to develop ICT skills across the curriculum will be encouraged. Where appropriate students will work towards accredited qualifications and use this as a basis for application beyond the school setting. Additionally, it is recognised that individuals with Autism frequently benefit from using this as a preferred method of learning as it does not require the social element that other learning styles are based on. Whilst this does not mean other forms of learning will be under-used, we intend to embrace this as an effective tool for promoting self-led learning and achievement, alongside new and creative technologies that promote social interaction and teach our students to be safe and confident users of ICT.
